Determination of Methylmercury in Natural Waters by Distillation-Ethylation GC-CVAFS Analysis


Methylmercury (CH3Hg) is an environmental pollutant with neurotoxicity, which mainly invades the central nervous system, can seriously cause language and memory impairment, and is highly toxic.

The main manifestations of organic mercury poisoning are: Stomatitis can occur no matter how it invades, and acute gastroenteritis can be caused by oral administration; neuropsychiatric symptoms include neurasthenia syndrome, mental disorders, delirium, coma, paralysis, tremor, ataxia, Centripetal visual field narrowing, etc.; kidney damage can occur, and severe cases can cause acute renal failure. In addition, it can still cause heart, liver damage, and skin damage.

The content of methylmercury in natural water bodies is very small, but the special biological toxicity of methylmercury makes it very important in the study of biogeochemical cycle of mercury in water bodies.


At present, benzene extraction-GC-AAS method is widely used in the domestic determination of methylmercury in natural water[1], extraction-liquid chromatography[2], mercapto cotton enrichment gas chromatography electron capture method[3-7] and mercapto cotton enrichment cold atomic fluorescence method[8].


However, these analytical methods have problems such as large sampling volume, low sensitivity, poor selectivity, or chromatographic column reaction. Therefore, it is necessary to establish an accurate, sensitive, and easy-to-operate analytical method for methylmercury in natural water. This study introduces Distillation-ethylation GC-CVAFS analysis.


1 Experimental part


1.1 Instruments and reagents


1.1.1 Main instruments Tekran2500CVAFS mercury detector; borosilicate glass reaction bottle (200mL); PTFE distillation flaskPTFE receiving bottledistillation heating device; high-purity argon; pure nitrogen; nickel-chromium wire heating coil (diameter 0.5mm); gas chromatography column: silanized silica gel glass column The chromatographic column filler is 15% OV-3 Chrom W-AW (DMCS) 80/100, with an inner diameter of 0.5cm and a length of 75cm); decomposition tube: made of quartz tube, filled with quartz chips with a particle size of 1mm in the middle, and at both ends Block with quartz wool; Tenax tube: fill 100mg Tenax-TA (particle size 20/35 mesh) into a quartz tube with an inner diameter of 6 mm and a length of 12 cm, and fill the two ends of Tenax with quartz wool.
