Product Description

Hot block digestion is a lab technique using a heated, non-metallic block (like PTFE-coated graphite) with uniform wells to efficiently digest large numbers of samples (water, soil) for metals analysis, breaking them down with acids into a liquid form suitable for instruments like ICP-MS or AA, ensuring consistency, reducing contamination, and often following EPA methods. It offers faster, cleaner, and safer sample prep compared to traditional methods, using disposable tubes to prevent glassware contamination

How it works
  • Uniform Heating:
A graphite block with integrated heaters provides consistent, controlled temperatures to multiple sample vials simultaneously, ensuring even digestion.
  • Corrosion Resistance:
Blocks are coated with materials like PFA (Teflon), and samples are often placed in polypropylene or PFA tubes, preventing metal contamination from the apparatus.
  • Sample Prep:
Samples (water, soil, sludge) are mixed with acids (e.g., nitric acid) in the vials and heated to break down the matrix.
  • Post-Digestion:
The resulting liquid solution is then ready for analysis by techniques like ICP-MS or AA, requiring a clear, particle-free sample.

Key advantages
  • High Throughput:
Accommodates many samples (e.g., 12 to 80) at once, ideal for large batches.
  • Reduced Contamination:
Non-metallic construction and disposable vessels prevent metal leaching.
  • Automation & Control:
Integrated controllers maintain precise temperatures (e.g., ±0.1°C) and can be programmed for specific methods, with alarms for safety.

Common Uses
  • Metals analysis in environmental samples (water, soil, waste).
